Melbourne club Athenaeum in turmoil over women ban

Can we please have some context for this story ?

Good reporters would explain:
  • How widespread and prestigious are single sex clubs in capital cities.
  • How many are restricted to men only ? women only ?
  • Do they have or need specific exemptions from Equal Opportunity Laws ?
  • Does the published charter of this club state that it was "founded to provide a venue for Melbourne's civic, business, academic and political leaders" ?
  • Was the decision to not consider admission of women made through normal and correct club procedures ?
Unfortunately, the time and expertise that reporters seem to dedicate to researching stories is continuing to decline.
