Lives of Social Insects (Peggy Larson)

The Larsons mix scholarship and a thorough review of social insects species with a very readable style. They draw out patterns of adaptation that vary amazingly between related species. They link these developments to descriptions of life styles that exist so close to us, and yet are alien to us due to scale or concealment. The book seems to work up to the bees as pinnacles of complex social adaptation, and ends leaving the reader eager for more....
