Stowaway to Mars (John Wyndham)

Social presumptions about male-female capacities, as well as relationship goals are a fundamental theme and driver in this novel. They seem so unreasonable from a 21st century perspective that they strain credibility more than the science fiction itself. The plot is pretty standard fare of first contact with aliens on mars. The technology is interesting in both style and science, but the plot fails to base itself solidly on the "what-if" of the science and falls back too much on themes of sex, stylized personal and international conflict. Definitely not Wyndham at his best. Read only for historical interest.
