Footy Finally

I watched the opening ceremony and was moved emotionally by the spectacle of so many people cooperating to create a shared experience. It reminded me of the Hitler's Nuremburg Rally, and of the feeling that I experience at religious ceremonies. Regardless, of one's support for the purpose of such an event, there is something hypnotic in the desire to act in unison with so many others. Organisations in the US recognise this: the hype and glitz around the " event " that accompanies product launches
from companies like Microsoft; the drama of the evangelist rally etc. Australian organisations usually lack the sense of self importance to attempt this. Australian people usually prefer to make fun of events or people that claim to be important. The "tall poppy " syndrome.
It would be wonderful if we Australians could generate some of this emotional depth around some more important national institutions. It would also be wonderful if Australian Rules Football could become a national institution which encouraged and modeled good ethics such as " sportsmanship ".
